Elegant, Simple Basement
The words elegant, simple, and beautiful are not normally associated with basements. One would be inclined to think of dank, dark, and dusty!
This renovation turned a dank, dark basement into a beautiful elegant space that added value to the homeowner’s property. It has provided a living area that is perfect for a student, an elderly parent, or a young couple who desires privacy while still being a part of the main household.
A neutral palette of dove gray walls, white doors, and white skirtings was chosen to allow the occupant to be creative with colorful wall art hangings and ornaments. The gray-brown laminated wooden panels on the floors span across the entire space, creating an illusion of increased size and openness. Each section of the space transitions seamlessly into the next, creating a harmonious and cohesive whole. However, should the need arise for privacy or separation, the interleading doors can be easily closed to divide the space into individual sections.
Lighting is always a concern in a basement, and our renovators lit up the space with large ceiling flush mount LED lights and in-built ceiling spotlights.
The bathroom is compact and well-appointed with a white-topped vanity, sunken basin, and contrasting chrome fittings. Mounted above the vanity is a large mirror that reflects the light from the overhead, modern wall sconce. To create a cohesive and harmonious design, the floor was clad with large dark gray tiles that seamlessly blend with the lighter gray walls.
Starting the day is an absolute delight with the spacious walk-in shower and adjustable rainhead that offers a choice of settings from a cascading jet to a gentle mist. The shower is clad from floor to ceiling in spectacular gun-metal porcelain tiles that have a distinctly natural, earthy character creating a completely unique look.
The occupants have a unique walk-in area, fitted with hanging space and shelving. It can be used for sporting gear, clothing, a washing machine, a dryer, or other household items that need to be readily available, but stored neatly out of sight.
The appeal of this basement design lies in its ability to offer flexibility and versatility, allowing the occupants to configure the space in a way that best suits their needs and personality. With the clever use of placement of furniture, the space can be transformed to include a dining area, a lounge, a comfortable bedroom, a cozy reading nook, or a fabulous rec room for the teens to play video games.
